Get outside and connect with nature this summer!

Lake Forest Open Lands summer programs encourage children to actively investigate our prairie, wetland and woodland habitats, animals and birds. We offer a variety of programs with a flexible schedule, so you can customize your choices to fit your family’s summer plans.
We are committed to providing a safe summer outdoor experience and follow current guidelines from state and local public health officials

Outdoor Explorers
Each day of the week focuses on a different theme through a variety of outdoor activities. Each week offers new and different adventures based on these daily themes. An À La Carte registration allows you to choose a day, a week, or all the programs.

Mondays: Summer Buggin’- A different adventure each Monday!
Flutter and fly into the world of bees and butterflies on an insect-themed exploration! Each Monday we buzz into a new insect adventure. You can come every Monday or choose those Mondays that work for your schedule. Or you can register for a whole week of unique adventures.

Tuesdays: Take Me to the Water – A different adventure each Tuesday!
The wonders of water are everywhere. Each Tuesday we dive into a new wet and wild adventure. You can come every Tuesday or choose those Tuesdays that work for your schedule. Or you can register for a whole week of unique adventures.

Wednesdays: Come Fly with Me- A different adventure each Wednesday!
See the world from a birds-eye view! Each Wednesday we will soar into a new adventure. You can come every Wednesday or choose those Wednesdays that work for your schedule. Or you can register for a whole week of unique adventures.

Thursdays: Walk on the Wild Side- A different adventure each Thursday!
The preserves hold many secrets about the hidden lives of wild animals. Each Thursday we uncover new clues about our animal friends. You can come every Thursday or choose those Thursdays that work for your schedule. Or you can register for a whole week of unique adventures.

Story Time Adventure
Connect young children with nature with our Story Time Adventures. We share a nature-themed story and participate in a series of sensory-based activities that bring the story to live. An À La Carte registration allows you to choose the days that work for you or sign up for all the programs.

Junior Restoration Ecologists

Take on the role of restoration ecologist and make a lasting connection with our local ecosystems as you work alongside our Land Management team. As a Junior Ecologist, you’ll learn about the impacts of invasive species and discover the benefits of native plants. This service learning opportunity includes invasive species removal, seed collection and processing, and planting of native species. An À La Carte registration allows you to choose the days that work for you or sign up for all the programs.

Family Nature Evenings
Join us for some outdoor family fun!

Each Wednesday evening we will embark on a different adventure to enjoy the warm summer evening and create lasting family memories.

Enjoy a guided hike and stories and s’mores around the campfire
June 23: Creek Stomp
Bring your wellies or water shoes to get up close and personal with the river

Climb into the trees and see the world through a bird’s eyes

Join us for an evening of classic outdoor games

• Limit 20 participants
• Recommended for families with children ages 5-12 years.

While we want to provide your child with a fun and memorable summer outdoor experience, your child’s and family's safety is our biggest concern. Our programs follow current Covid guidelines outlined by the CDC and Lake County Health Department. We will keep you apprised of any changes.

Registered participants will receive an information packet via email prior to the start of the programs. Information forms included in this packet need to be filled out and returned prior to the program start date.

Summer 2021 Programs- Refund/ Cancellation Policy

Please notify us via email in order to receive a refund. Refunds apply to each individual person and each program registered. See details below:

Cancellations up to 1 week prior to the program start date: Full refund
Cancellations after 1 week prior to the program start date: 50% refund

Lake Forest Open Lands reserves the right to cancel a program for safety or other reasons at our discretion. In this case, you will be notified of the cancellation at least two weeks prior to the program start date. Full refunds will be issued.
